Programa piloto da CBS, o CBS Mobile Zone, faz pairar uma nuvem de conexão W-Fi em Manhattan, cobrindo mais de 20 blocos da cidade, colocando mais de 150 hotspots para acesso com celulares, palms e laptops. Vejam trecho da matéria Times Square gets gift of free Wi-Fi do AM NewYork:
“A large chunk of midtown Manhattan is going Wi-Fi thanks to a new pilot program being unveiled at the end of this month by CBS and the city. The wireless high-speed network, called “CBS Mobile Zone,” will enable New Yorkers with Wi-Fi-enabled cell phones, laptops or other devices to access the Internet for free, and make voice over Internet (VOI) calls. The six-month program will cover more than 20 city blocks from Times Square to Central Park South and from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue. The program will add to more than 150 wireless “hotspots” that are located in public spaces throughout the region, according to “NYC Wireless,” a nonprofit group that has set up wireless networks throughout the city.

The pilot program is being overseen by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and New York City Transit to test the potential communications capabilities of Wi-Fi technology. If all goes according to plan, CBS and MTA officials said there is a chance the program will be extended. ‘It’s a technology that wold be used for advertising outside subway stops,’ said MTA spokesman, Jeremy Soffin. ‘We think in the long run this technology will allow us o use the signs to display important information for customers in emergency situations.
Mais Wi-Fi. Notícia no CNET afirma que a maioria dos usuários de computadores, 54%, ja pongou na conexão Wi-Fi de alguém sem pedir…Bom, o melhor mesmo é liberar o acesso e colocar todos na legalidade:
“Fifty-four percent of computer users admit to using someone else’s Wi-Fi without permission, according to a new survey by security firm Sophos. And many Internet-enabled homes fail to secure their wireless connection properly with passwords and encryption, allowing others to steal Internet access rather than pay an ISP, said Sophos, which carried out the 560-person survey.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said borrowing Wi-Fi Internet access may feel like a victimless crime but it deprives ISPs of revenue. Furthermore, if you hop onto your next-door neighbor’s wireless broadband connection to download movies and music from the Internet, chances are that you are also slowing down their Internet access and depleting their download limit, Cluley added. In addition, using an electronic communications service with the intent to avoid paying is breaking the law.”
